PUTTING GOD’S NEEDS FIRST

“Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.”
Haggai 1:3-5

The lesson in this text is that we must learn to put God first in all things.
The background to this text was that the temple lie waste, crumbling and in
a state of disrepair while the Jews were busy building mansions or what the
Prophet called ‘cieled’ or ‘panelled’ houses, what in today’s jargon would be ‘luxurious, fully furnished mansions. ‘The truth is that God has no problem with you building and living in good houses, not at all. What he decries is that we abandon the welfare and well being of his kingdom and busy doing our own thing.

Let’s consider another scripture:

“If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and
their years in pleasures.”
Job 36:11

The condition for enjoying God’s blessings is to ‘obey and serve him.’ We are to put God first in everything we do. Let’s look at three specific areas we are to put God first:

1. In Our Trust
It is important that we put God first in our TRUST. In your heart of heart, who do you truly trust first? Your father, boss or friend? In a crisis, who do you run to?

“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”
Psalm 20:7

Let your confidence be in the Lord regardless what betides.

2. With Our Treasure
If truly you put God first in your treasure, nobody will be begging you to pay your tithe and support the work of the kingdom. Supporting the kingdom will be of paramount importance to you. It’s amazing how money is truly a measure of commitment. If you can’t give God your money, it is proof that you have not given Him your heart.

3. With Our Time
We must serve God with the best part of our time. Prayer, soul winning, Bible study all take time. I don’t have time is the refrain of those who are not putting God first.

“So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.”
Ps 61:8

Are you giving your best daily? Are you trusting Him daily? Are you blessing His work and servants with your money daily?
